Alzheimer’s Support is opening a new art group in Chippenham in September thanks to funding from Chippenham Borough Lands Charity.

It will be charity's fourth group in Wiltshire where people living with dementia and a family carer can take part in a wide variety of art projects guided by a professional artist.

Group organiser Pam Ollis, who already runs Alzheimer's Support's popular weekly group in Bradenstoke, said: “People love coming along and it is so good to see everyone try new things. We know there’s demand for a group in Chippenham, and art is so beneficial for people affected by dementia.

"The art groups we run already are so valued by the people who come along. There is such a great camaraderie in the group with everyone working alongside each other at their own pace, being creative together, chatting a bit. Sometimes we all burst into song! It's a lovely atmosphere.

"Working with colour and texture can be so important for people living with dementia, and it's relaxing for carers too to have a break from the day to day tasks and focus on something creative. We aren't looking for masterpieces, but people get a real sense of achievement from what they have created."

The group is being made possible by funding of £1,615 from Chippenham Borough Lands Charity.

CEO Phil Tansley said: “We are delighted to be providing funding for this new Alzheimer’s Support art group in Chippenham. The group will give local people living with dementia, and their families, a fantastic opportunity to undertake artistic activities designed to benefit both the body and mind in a friendly, safe, and supportive environment.”

Alzheimer's Support CEO Sarah Marriott said: "We could not have opened this fourth group without the support of this fantastic local charity. So many thanks are due to everyone involved at Chippenham Borough Lands - they really do make things happen in the town and we are very grateful to have their support."

The new group will meet monthly on Wednesday afternoons at King Alfred's Hall.
