Mondays just got better for people living with dementia in Warminster, as Old Silk Work club prepares to open for an extra day each week.

The club in Beech Avenue is currently open every Tuesday to Friday for 13 people at a time who live in their own homes with dementia. It offers a stimulating day out that for many is the ‘best day of the week’ and gives their families a day off from caring. From 9th May it will also be open on Mondays.

Club manager Louise Gover said: “We have wanted to do this for a long time as we have a waiting list of people wanting to come. As a charity we operate on a loss so we need to be sure there will be enough members to take up all the spaces – and we are definitely there now.

“We have had amazing support from the Warminster community both to convert the building and since we opened in 2018. It really is Warminster’s club – so many people support us and fundraise or volunteer for us, and this is the outcome – more dementia care for the people that need it!”

Volunteering at Old Silk Works

Maria Noke, whose late father Ronald was a member at the club, and who now volunteers said: “I am so excited that I have been given the opportunity of volunteering at old silk works club on a Monday from May.  I already volunteer on a Thursday and every week I go it’s like walking into a big happy loving cuddle. I have made so many friends there and enjoy being part of their everyday lives, helping club members feel independent, less lonely and valuing their friendships, stories and common interests.

“Before volunteering I was a carer myself and my Dad was a member at Old Silk Works on both a Wednesday and Friday. I had much needed respite whilst knowing that Dad was safe and happy and wonderfully entertained all day. The love my Dad and myself felt being supported by the club still touches my heart today and forever will.

“Well done Old Silk Works you are fantastic and Mondays just got a whole lot better for so many.”

In 2019 the club won best dementia design at the national Dementia Care Awards.
