One of the real joys for support workers is making memories their clients and their families can cherish forever. When Paula Kearley found out Ray and his wife Joan were approaching an anniversary milestone, she decided to make the event extra special.

"October 22nd marked the 60th wedding anniversary of my client Ray and his wife Joan. I bought them flowers and a card, however the biggest surprise was yet to come.

“The church in Bulford where they got married is only open on Sundays, but I couldn't let this spoil their day, so I organised for it to be opened during the week so I could take Ray and Joan there.

“They were overwhelmed and grateful to be back at St Leonard’s and to hear a prayer being read out that had been specially written for them. Joan said I was sent to them from God above.

Very, very emotional

“Afterwards we visited the grave where Joan’s parents are buried. It was a very, very emotional moment. We then went back for a massive feast at home. Their son Andrew was there as a surprise too, it was just a perfect day.

“Just looking at Ray and Joan made me believe in the power of forever. They know exactly what it means to grow older together. I asked them what is their secret to a happy marriage is. Joan said that it’s perseverance and tolerance and never to give up on each other, while Ray said it’s to always listen to your wife!”

“I felt so privileged to be a small part of this wonderful celebration of their love. I absolutely love my job and this is the exact reason why I do what I do!”
