Why day care?

A full day out in a supportive, stimulating environment is hugely beneficial to people living with dementia and provides a real break for family carers. Our clubs are run by specialist staff and trained volunteers who focus on the person rather than the dementia. Boosting confidence, building relationships and creating opportunities for meaningful social engagement are at the heart of their ethos.

Each of our clubs has its own 'personality' but each follows our award-winning format of a relaxed, informal atmosphere, small group sizes with the same people each day of the week, and high staff and volunteer ratios to allow members real choice in how they spend their time.  Club members can join in small group activities, pursue hobbies that they enjoy, or just enjoy their own time in the company of others - all in a safe, friendly and unpressured environment.

A wide range of activities are offered, and our excellent links with our local communities mean there are always a steady stream of visitors of all ages and walks of life. Musicians are particularly welcome and we have frequent visits from small groups or individuals - dancing is not compulsory but often irresistible.

Younger people are also often in the clubs. We have regular links with local primary and secondary schools - the relationships and mutual learning between the generations is lovely to see. And of course our resident therapy whippets Higby and Dottie are much loved members of the team.

Lunch time is a focal point of the day. A nutritious, home-cooked meal is provided and whoever feels like it can help with the preparations.

Starting at a day club

We know that people can be reluctant to attend day care and we take this as a starting point for our work.

Potential members and a family member are invited to drop in for coffee and to see the club in action before deciding whether to join. We will make every effort to get to know the new member and to understand their preferences, life story and expectations so that their time with us will be as enjoyable as possible.

Although some clubs have waiting lists at times, we encourage people to come and see us early on to explore how we can accommodate needs as they develop.

What they say

Alzheimer's Support came into our lives at just the right time and the club has been the highlight of Mum's week ever since.

The atmosphere is amazing and the care and support you and your team give to the members is inspirational

Day club costs

From 1st April 2023 we charge £52 per person per day towards running costs and £28 for non-attendance. Please note this is subsidised and we fundraise and apply for grants to meet the true running costs.
