There was great excitement at the Old Silk Works club in Warminster when a video and photo crew arrived on behalf of The Sun newspaper to film manager Louise Gover at work.

Louise was nominated for the Unsung Hero award in the newspaper's Who Cares Wins NHS and care sector awards by carer Maria Noke, whose late father Ron Lane attended the day club.

The paper’s staff had also discovered her Tik Tok dances raising money for a new club jukebox and were impressed by her selfless efforts during lockdown. These including shopping for carers in fancy dress, cooking and delivering roast dinners, volunteering in a care home and various other community roles, as well as looking after her own family and supporting club families by phone and video-link.

When The Sun came to our day club

Louise said: “When I first got the email from the newspaper I thought it was a joke and the Sun coming to video me at work was surreal.

“It’s a real honour to be considered for the shortlist, but I don’t really feel I deserve the award, I just did what I did because I like helping people. My daughter worked as a carer during lockdown and every day she would dress up in her PPE and go and visit people so I thought I couldn’t just sit at home doing nothing.”

The video of Louise at work and an interview with Maria will now be sent to the judging panel and everyone connected with the club is looking forward to hearing news of the nominations.  If she makes the shortlist she will be invited to an awards ceremony televised on Channel Four in September.
