Trowbridge’s dementia day club has had a makeover to mark its 10th birthday – thanks to a company that has supported it from the start.

A team from Danone spent the day redecorating Mill Street Club, using paint, brushes and rollers generously supplied free of charge by Brewers Decorating Centre in Trowbridge. The 15-strong team repainted the main club room and woodwork ahead of the club's 10th anniversary party.

The club, where people with dementia can enjoy a full day of companionship and activities, opened in May 2014 after a fundraising appeal and has made a difference in the lives of hundreds of families affected by dementia in the years since then.

Hannah Charlene Smith, whose late grandmother Jean Harvey was a member said: “This day club did wonders for Gran and really bought her spirit back and made her smile again. For that I will be eternally grateful to the staff and members of this amazing charity.”

Danone has long supported the club with staff volunteering, in particular providing food for celebration summer and Christmas parties.

Ceri Hamlen, an account manager at Danone, and the company's charity champion has been involved from the start. She said: "We have loved supporting Mill Street. It's been a bit of a family affair as my husband helped make the indoor garden here, and made the outside planters. Now my daughter who works for Danone is also here helping out. It's a brilliant club and we have been proud to support it over the years."

Club manager Sharon Cooper said: "A huge Mill Street thank you to a fabulous team of volunteers who did a wonderful job sprucing us up again 10 years on. Also our thanks to Brewers of Trowbridge for supplying us with all paints, brushes and rollers for free. Without amazing people and companies like this we couldn't do what we do."

Earlier this year the entire day club team at Alzheimer's Support, including staff and volunteers at Mill Street, won the dementia category at the Markel 3rd Sector Care Awards. Judges were impressed by the individual attention shown to members, and relaxed club atmosphere.

Head of day care Grant Newton said: “We are so grateful to everyone who donated or fundraised to help us create this very special place and for continuing to support the club. It is amazing to see what we and the Trowbridge community have created together.”
