Singing for the Brain
Singing for the Brain® was started by the Alzheimer’s Society in 2003 and builds on the fact that people with dementia can recall words of songs and melodies after other memories have faded.
Singing together in the round is a stimulating and uplifting social activity designed to enhance the wellbeing of people with dementia together with their carers.
Through the music, confidence, mood and self-esteem are boosted.
Our groups are run in partnership with the Society. They are led by experienced singing teachers who are trained in Singing for the Brain® methods, and supported by trained volunteers.
What to expect at a group
We start with some social time, when people can catch up over a cup of tea or coffee.
After half an hour, we move into the circle for a gentle warm-up. This involves stretching and actions before moving on to some vocal warm-ups and singing.
New songs are learned by ear, aiding concentration and giving sense of accomplishment, while familiar tunes rekindle memories. We often sing well-known songs in rounds or ‘against’ other songs to build harmonies. Again this creates an element of challenge - and some beautiful sounds! We often include action songs. These are carefully chosen to be suitable for people with memory loss, and everyone can join in as much or as little as they like.
Our teachers welcome suggestions for songs that have a particular meaning for members of the group. The groups are friendly and inclusive. Being good at singing is not necessary, and we have plenty of laughter along the way.
