Open day at dementia day club

press release - June 22 2011

Devizes residents are invited to find out more about dementia – and the therapeutic power of animals - at an open day at Sidmouth Club next week.

The day club is opening its garden at a drop in event to mark Dementia Awareness Week.

Special guests at the day will be former rescue dogs Monty and Dave, who have recently been named Overall Champions (non-pedigree) at the Bowood Dog Show.

Owner and day club manager Grant Newton said: “We were thrilled when they won Best Rescue Dog and then were named overall Champions. The judges were impressed with them, especially when they heard about their work at the club.”

The dogs, who were adopted from RSPCA home, come to the club regularly where they provide hours of pleasure to the members.

Physiotherapist Paula Sanford said: “There is plenty of research showing that animals are therapeutic especially as a pathway for expression.  Monty and Dave are incredibly calm dogs and you see the club members stroke them and talk about them and talk to them.  The dogs don’t ask them to repeat themselves or remind them that they have said that already.”

Sidmouth Club garden will be open from 11 to 1pm on Thursday July 7. Refreshments will be provided and donations to the charity Alzheimer’s Support, which runs the club, will be welcome.
