South WiltsBill heads fundraising drive
press release - June ...
A carer who was helped by Wiltshire charity Alzheimer’s Support is hoping to repeat his fundraising success at an envelope collection next week. (July 3-9)
Last year Bill Elliott was the most successful single collector in the doorstep fundraiser, bringing in more than £250 in donations from his village of Great Cheverell near Devizes.
Bill received support from the charity after his wife Doreen began showing symptoms of dementia around ten years years ago.
She now lives in a nearby care home but Bill still attends carers’ groups and Alzheimer cafes and he recently joined the charity’s computer club to learn more about the Internet.
He said: “The help I have had from Alzheimer’s Support has been absolutely invaluable. All the money we raise will be spent locally in Wiltshire and even in Great Cheverell, as they support a number of people in the village. This year several people have offered to help me with the collection so we will have a good team.”
Fundraising manager Lesley Crawford said: “As an organisation we need to raise £190,000 before next April to keep our services running. This collection is an important part of our fundraising drive and we hope that everyone across East and West Wiltshire who gets an envelope through their door will be as generous as the residents of Great Cheverell were last year.”
The envelope collection will be run in towns and villages throughout East and West Wiltshire between July 3 and 9, and marks national Dementia Awareness Week.
Alzheimer’s Support offers a range of practical services to people with dementia and their carers, and offers information and advice from its offices in Trowbridge and Devizes. To find out more, contact 01225 776481.
