Drowning in a sea of books

Devizes fundraisers ‘drowning in a sea of books’

press release - October 21 2011

When is a bric-a-brac sale more than a bric-a-brac sale?

When more than 2,000 books are amongst the items on offer.

Volunteers at Alzheimer Support’s regular bric-a-brac sales realised they had a phenomenon on their hands when they built up a stock of more than 2,000 second-hand books.

Organiser Janet Dore said: “It’s not that we are not selling the books. What is happening is that people buy them and read them, then bring them back to sell again. People in Devizes are obviously very fond of reading and sharing their books, and we seem to have become a book recycling service.

“It’s great for us because we can make more money for Alzheimer’s Support, but it has reached a point where we need more help with the sales as 2,000-plus books are a lot to manage.” The next bric-a-brac and book sale is at Devizes Scout Hall, Southbroome Road, on November 5.

Helpers are needed to set up from 8am to 10am, to sell between 10am and 12pm, and to help put away after the sale. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Lesley Crawford on 01225 776481.

Alzheimer’s Support runs a range of services for people with dementia and their family carers, including the Sidmouth Club and information centre at 5 Sidmouth Street, Devizes.
